The School To Prison Pipeline Panel Discussion - 1/24/2018

Consider that 40 percent of students expelled in the U.S. each year are black and 70 percent involved in school arrests are black and Latino. For far too many students, disproportionally students of color, entering the gateway to incarceration begins with a referral from the classroom to the courtroom. This phenomenon funnels students out of school and into the streets and the juvenile correction system perpetuates a cycle known as the “School-to-Prison-Pipeline,” depriving children and youth of meaningful opportunities for education, future employment, and participation in our democracy.

The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world and more than 60 percent of those inmates are African-American and Latino—despite the fact they make up only 30 percent of the country’s population.

How did we get here and what will it take to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline?

SVP's CEO, Solynn McCurdy, will moderate a conversation with a panel of local experts from the region. Please join us to learn about the school-to-prison pipeline and how you can contribute to creating pathways--not pipelines--in schools & communities. Register via Eventbrite
