Black Child Development Institute 2019 Spring Institute

Africatown Center for Education & Innovation - Communiversity AND Black Child Development Institute (BCDI) Seattle-affiliate proudly present the 2019 BCDI Spring Institute:

"Cultivating the Genius of Black Children!" Speaker: Dr. Debra Ren-Etta Sullivan

10:00 am - 12:15 pm. Cultivating the Genius of Black Children. Register at Eventbrite

Much attention has been given to the opportunity gap and the often-resulting achievement gap of Black children and other children of color. For example, “Among the 200 biggest school districts in the U.S., Seattle has the fifth-biggest gap in achievement between Black and white students. Seattle’s White-Black gap is also the biggest in Washington" (taken from the Standford Study of 2009-2012 test scores from third- through eighth-grade students). Join BCDI Seattle-affiliate and Africatown Center for Education & Innovation - Communiversity, as we celebrate National Black Child Development Week, May 13th – May 18th with speaker Dr. Sullivan on May 18th!

What about solutions? Come to this workshop facilitated by Dr. Sullivan who will provide effective strategies and best practices to help parents, community activists, social workers, and educators create environments and communities where Black youth and families can thrive! During this session, Dr. Sullivan will discuss:

How culture influences learning styles, preferences, and personalities in Black children & youth

How to begin to incorporate cultural influences into your parenting, working, and teaching process

How to expand your toolbox and invigorate not only yourself, but children, families, and classrooms)

Ways to strengthen your relationships with Black children and their families

12:15 pm - 1:00 pm. Lunch & Networking

1:00 pm – 3:00 pm. Active Engagement!

Often, we attend workshops and seminars, but we do not know what to do with the knowledge we received, nor do we get much of a chance to discuss what we learned AND have an opportunity to create a plan to implement this new information. During the 2nd half of our Institute during Active Engagement, we will do exactly this!

From 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm, four to five volunteer participants, will have an opportunity to do a five-minute presentation to attendees about what they are working on regarding Black children/families and in return, get feedback from the community at large. During the second hour from 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm, we will work on creating a plan and implementing what we just learned on supporting the needs of Black children, whether it deals with parenting, social work, community building or even teaching. Come and join us for this exciting, interactive session!

STARS credit available and a light lunch will be served!
