Health Gap Reflects History of Racism and Mistrust

Black people are more likely than Whites to:

  • contract certain illnesses,
  • to get less effective medical treatment,
  • and to die prematurely.

This means that we have an "unequal opportunity" to be healthy. This health gap must be closed and education is the most important tool available to close it.

"Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health is the most shocking and the most inhumane."

- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. March 25, 1966, 2nd National Convention of the Medical Committee for Human Rights
